Nigeria has recorded 14 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total number from 51 to 65.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) announced this via its Twitter handle on Thursday night.

It said 12 of the cases are in Lagos while two are in Abuja.

The centre said six of the new cases were “detected on a vessel”, while three are returning travellers and one, a close contact of a confirmed case.

The latest data shows Lagos still has the highest number of cases, 44, while Abuja and Ogun have 12 and three cases respectively.

Ekiti, Oyo, Edo, Bauchi, Osun and Rivers all have one coronavirus patient each.

Nigeria’s only casualty from the disease is Suleiman Achimugu, former managing director of the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), who died on Monday.

About 178 persons have been tested for the disease as of Tuesday, according to data from the NCDC.

In Africa, the coronavirus has so far infected 2,819 persons across 46 countries, leading to 73 deaths.

It remains a gloomy picture globally: 522,830 cases with 23,621 deaths. At least 123,300 have so far recovered from the infection.
