A health official with the World Health Organisation has been infected with the Ebola virus while working with patients in Sierra Leone.
According to a statement by the global health body on Sunday, it would be the first time a WHO employee would be infected with the virus.
While noting that it was not clear how the worker got infected, it said it would ensure that the official gets all the necessary treatment needed to manage an Ebola case.
Meanwhile, the British Department of Health has said one of its citizen infected with the virus in Sierra Leone will be flown to the UK.
The man, simply identified as William, lives in the West African nation in a home established by an American university for researchers.
He was volunteering as a nurse at the Kenema Government Hospital, where according to the Associated Press, Ebola patients were being treated.
The Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Dr. John Watson, in a statement on Sunday said the UK government has prepared a specially equipped C17 Royal Air Force plane to transport him to an isolation unit at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust.
Watson said, “UK hospitals have a proven record of dealing with imported infectious diseases and this patient will be isolated and will receive the best care possible.”
