Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will on Monday, June9, join other stakeholders to participate in a three-day national conference in Ibadan, Oyo State, aimed at producing credible leaders and lasting peace ahead of 2015 general elections.
Prof Isaac Albert, chairman organizing committee of the conference said at a news conference that the conference was organised by the Peace and Conflict Studies Programme of the University of Ibadan in collaboration with Centre of Human Security, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential library, Abeokuta.
He said Obasanjo, as a former Nigeria leader would share his experiences with the delegates as the chairman of the occasion while Gov. Babatunde Fashola of Lagos would deliver the keynote speech on the theme of the conference.
Other leaders invited include the Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi, legislators, political party leaders while the duo of Prof Peter Okebukola, Director for Centre for Human Security at Obasanjo’s library and Prof Isaac Adewole, would co-host the conference.
Albert said that besides the politicians, 63 academic papers have been received from different papers presented from all over the world especially experts in peace and conflict studies.
He said the three-day conference will start from Monday June 9 to June 11 at the Trenchard Hall of University of Ibadan, adding that the conference was put together so as to proffer solution and debate how to produce credible leaders for Nigeria as well as review the leadership system and structure in the country.
“We are convinced that the crisis in Nigeria has to do with leadership, as our leaders have not been able to hold the nation together in spite of our ethnic diversity and religious plurality as you have in other advanced countries’’ he said.
Albert, a Professor in Peace and Conflict Studies, said Nigeria needs an acceptable leadership system capable of providing lasting peace and development for the country.
As a member of the ongoing national conference, he said the combination of the old and the young at the conference has turned out to be a blessing for the country.
Albert said that papers presented at the Leadership and Peace Conference would be collated with recommendations sent to the policy makers for implementation.
