The Ogun State Government says it has spent over N1.353bn on the payment of examination fees for final year students in secondary schools in the last three years.
State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Segun John Odubela, disclosed this in Ifo while on inspection tour of schools participating in the ongoing senior secondary school certificate examination.
In furtherance of its policy to make education affordable and accessible for all,the administration of Senator Ibikunle Amosun had on assumption of office in 29 May 2011, proclaimed free education at primary and secondary school levels.
“Under the policy, the government is also to provide the students with textbooks and other instructional materials as well as offset the fees demanded by the West African Examination Council from final year students,” a statement
Odubela, who praised Governor Amosun for being true to his promise, said the governor is always ready to release funds needed to offset the examination fee any time such is demanded for.
This, the commissioner added, is a marked departure from previous years when WAEC was forced to withhold results of the final year students in the state because the then government defaulted in the payment of the examination fee.
He enjoined the students to utilise the opportunity presented by the government payment of the exams fee to to make good their ambition of accessing education.
Odubela, who expressed satisfaction at the orderliness witnessed in most schools visited, enjoined the students to stay off any act that could impede their academic attainment.
