The Ogun State Government on Tuesday said it would concession the state-owned hospital mortuaries under a Public Private Partnership arrangement.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Olaokun Soyinka, who said this at the 2014 ministerial press briefing in Abeokuta, lamented the poor state of the mortuaries in the general hospitals as a result of dearth of personnel, said the previous concession process was also faulty.
“We found out that a number of mortuaries have been in concession, but it was not really done for the benefit of the concessionaires. What one saw from the result was that someone was taking money without putting much money back,’’ he said.
Soyinka, who said that a survey of the mortuaries had been done, added that “We have identified those that can be run by the state and what needs to be done to improve them.
“We will get a private operator to take over the facility, upgrade and operate it; then, bring in the revenue and share with government.”
The commissioner also said that no fewer than 63 illegal drug operators were sanctioned and prosecuted in the year under review as part of the war against quackery in the state.
According to the commissioner, the operators were sanctioned for offences such as storing fake and expired drugs as well as hiring unqualified staff.
