The immediate past Speaker of the Ogun state House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunmbi has been re-elected as the Speaker of the eight legislature, which was inaugurated few minutes ago at the Assembly chamber, Abeokuta.
Adekunmbi who is representing Yewa North 1 state constituency will be making history as the second lawmaker to be so returned as the Speaker of the House since its inauguration in 1979.
Hon. Titilayo Oseni (Mrs.) was returned as the speaker in 2007 but was removed in May, 2008 under the government of Governor Gbenga Daniel.
A returning member, Layiwola Ojodu (Abeokuta North) nominated the Speaker, and was seconded Adebiyi Adeleye (Remo North). With no objection from the entire 26 member in attendance, Adekunmbi was sworn in immediately by the House Clerk, Muyiwa Adenopo.
Our correspondent gathered that the emergence of Adekunmbi as the returning Speaker, may not be unconnected to the zoning arrangement of political posts.
With the Egba and Ijebu holding forth as the governor and deputy governor respectively, the Yewa is automatically zoned for the Speakership position.
However, a change in the leadership indicated that the House deputy Speaker, has been replaced with Kunle Oluomo (Ifo 1) nominated and returned as such.
He is replacing Tola Banjo (Ijebu ode), who lost the State House of Assembly election to Wale Alausa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The majority leader is Yinka Mafe (Sagamu 1), replacing Israel Jolaoso (Ewekoro).
In his acceptance speech, Adekunmbi promised to ensure that the people got the best from his leadership.
“The policy thrust of my new leadership is to collaborate with the Executive to
stimulate growth, create wealth through the enactment of enabling laws and passing of useful resolutions.
“We hope to leverage on the achievements of the past to engender a robust democratic dispensation this time around. Please rest assured, it is time for great deals from this government.”
The proceeding was witnessed by the state governor, Sen. Ibikunle Amosun, traditional rulers, party faithful and government officials.
