The Ondo State House of Assembly on Wednesday extended the tenure of 18 local government Caretaker Chairmen by six months.

The motion for extension was moved at plenary by the Majority Leader in the Assembly, Ifedayo Akinsoyinu and seconded by Banso Adeyinka.

Akinsoyinu said the motion for extension followed the request from the governor for the extension of the tenure of interim caretaker chairmen in the state.

He said the extension of the tenure of the chairmen became imperative given its expiration on Wednesday.

Akinsoyinu said local government election could not hold due to the pending law suit on the matter by the Peoples Democratic Party.

“Mr Governor has sought for six months extension and I hereby move the motion for the extension,” he said.

The House, which was presided over by the new speaker, Jumoke Akindele, resolved that extension of the tenure of the chairmen would enable them complete on-going projects in their councils.

In his contribution, Afolabi Akinsiku, the former House Committee Chairman on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, said Section 12 of the local government law allowed such extension.

Akinsiku said where the conduct of election was not practicable, the governor, with the approval of the assembly, should put in place an interim administration for a period of six months.

According to him, this could be reviewed as it pleased the House for a shorter or longer period.
