There was panic in Iside village, Amechi Awkunanaw in Enugu South local government area of Enugu state as a woman reportedly disappeared with a neighbour’s two children.

Although the names of the kids could not be ascertained, village sources said they were a seven-year-old girl and her five-year-old brother.

It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday after the children returned from church.

One of the sources said the two kids who hail from Abakaliki, Ebonyi state, had returned from church service in the afternoon without meeting their mother.

A source said: “But, a neighbour, a lady who parked into their compound less than two weeks with a mat and a gas cylinder, bolted with the two children.

“The only thing we know is that the strange lady asked the kids to accompany her to refill her gas cylinder and that was the last time she was seen.”

It was further gathered that the landlord of the yard, Benjamin Ogbodo-Ene, has been arrested by the police in connection with the disappearance of the children.

The chairman of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu South chapter, Ozo Emmanuel Ugwu, described the incident as an abomination and charged the security agents to ensure that the lady was apprehended and not to allow any harm to befall the children.

He said: “This is an abomination. I urge the security agents to ensure that the woman is arrested and prosecuted and to also ensure that no harm happens to the kids.”

The spokesman of the state police command, Daniel Ndukwe is yet to react to the incident.
