Pay back time for PDP senators as Saraki allocates juicy committees

Senate President, Bukola Saraki

After several months of lobbying and horse-trading, the tension which before now gripped members of the upper legislative chamber, over who gets what in the committees to oversee various ministries, departments and agencies of government, seems to have been doused with the announcement of 65 standing committees by Senate President Bukola Saraki.

In the new arrangement, Saraki’s rival in the contest for the senate presidency, Ahmed Lawan emerged as Chairman of the Defence Committee.

Another opponent of the senate president, Kabiru Marafa, was also named chairman of the Committee on National Population Commission.

Saraki increased the number of the committees from 57 out of which senators of the All Progressives Congress got the chairmanship of 41 committees and those of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party got 24.

Saraki had earlier named chairmen of some special committees, namely – Selection, statutorily chaired by the senate president himself; Rules and Business, Senate Services, Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions and Public Accounts.
