Prisons controller suspended, 55 others redeployed over Minna jail break

The Controller-General of Prisons, Dr. Peter Ekpendu, has ordered the immediate suspension of the Controller of Prisons, Niger State Command, Musa Maiyaki.

The CG also ordered the suspension of the Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Prison, Minna, Mohammed Bena; and all the other officers on duty during the December 6, 2014 jailbreak at the Minna Medium Security Prison.

The suspensions, according to a statement by the Prison Public Relations Officer, Ope Fatinikun on Tuesday, had been approved by the Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, pending the outcome of investigation into the jail-break at the prison.

Ekpendu also ordered the immediate transfer of 55 officers and men of the zonal and state headquarters in Minna to the Minna Medium Security Prison and the Old Prison to beef up security in the two prison formations.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has directed Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Command Commissioners of Police and all Police officers to sustain and uphold the rights of Nigerians and all residents.

Abba said this in commemoration of the International Human Rights Day 2014, a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, stated.

The statement quoted the IG as saying the recent launch of the Nigeria Police Force Human Rights Practice Manual was an example of his administration’s commitment to uphold human rights of the citizens.
