The Nigerian House of Representatives has urged the federal government to prioritize and invest more in education in order to curb the increased number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.
This urge came in a motion co-sponsord by Hon. Akinwunmi Olaitan(Lagos State), and Hon. Abdulraheem Olajide Jimoh (Lagos State ) during plenary at the green chamber.
While arguing the motion,Hon. Akinwumi cited a report presented by the World Federation of Teachers, pointed out that Nigeria is one of the 10 countries in the world accounting for the majority of children deprived of access to education.
Hon. Akinwumi said” Cultural factors, negative impact of insurgency on education, recent herdsmen/farmers clashes and inadequate funding of public schools are the major factors responsible for increase number of out- of -school -children in the country”.
In his contribution to the motion, Hon. Abdulraheem Olajide Jimoh said it is only when the children are properly educated that they can be useful to the society and help grow the economy of the country.
Other members who contributed to the motion observed that implication of increased rate of out-of-school children on National Development will increase crime rate, worsen the economy, and exacerbate security issues.
The House therefore unanimously resolved to urge the federal government, minister of education, all stakeholders in the education sector to ensure the enforcement of Universal Basic Education (UBE) Act, Improve on educational infrastructure and prioritise education in the budgets.
The members of the green chamber also adopted an amendment that primary and secondary education should be free and compulsory for all Nigerian children.
The committee on Basic Education and services is to take a critical look into the issues raised and come up with lasting solutions and report back within six weeks for further legislative action.
