Riyadh Air announced on Wednesday at the Future Investment Initiative (FII) 8th Edition Conference an agreement to purchase 60 Airbus A321neo single-aisle aircraft.
This multibillion-dollar deal marks a significant step toward the airline’s maiden flight scheduled for 2025 and positions it for efficient operations with an optimal fleet mix to support its network ambitions of reaching 100 destinations by 2030.
The order was formalized during a signing ceremony in Riyadh, attended by Tony Douglas, CEO of Riyadh Air, and Christian Scherer, CEO of Commercial Aircraft at Airbus.
With this latest acquisition, Riyadh Air now has a total of 132 aircraft on order, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability by operating one of the most modern and fuel-efficient fleets in the world.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Governor of the Public Investment Fund (PIF) and Chairman of Riyadh Air, expressed enthusiasm for this milestone, stating, “This deal underlines the airline’s ambitious intentions in advance of next year’s launch as it builds a comprehensive international network and establishes Riyadh as a major strategic global aviation hub.”
Tony Douglas added: “This order will not only enable us to support economic growth in the aviation industry, but it will also ensure Riyadh Air operates one of the most sustainable fleets in the industry, playing a vital role in helping Saudi Arabia achieve its net-zero emissions goals.”
Christian Scherer remarked on the partnership, stating, “We are proud to welcome Riyadh Air as a new Airbus customer. The latest generation A321neo aircraft will bring exceptional efficiency to the airline’s operations and comfort to its passengers.”
Riyadh Air aims to provide an innovative guest experience equipped with the latest digital features and advanced entertainment systems, ensuring best-in-class aircraft cabin interior design.
This initiative aligns with PIF’s strategy to unlock promising sectors locally to support economic diversification.
Riyadh Air will facilitate tourism to Saudi Arabia’s cultural and natural attractions and further establish the city as a prominent business hub.
The airline is expected to be a catalyst for the Saudi National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the National Tourism Strategy by increasing air transport options, enhancing cargo capacity, and growing international passenger traffic.
