Shahktar beat Young Boys to secure first Champions League win of session

Shakhtar Donetsk came from behind to earn their first victory in this season’s Champions League – and leave Young Boys still without a point.

Kastriot Imeri gave the Swiss champions a surprise 27th-minute lead, punishing the hosts after Cheikh Niasse intercepted a pass, to end Young Boys’ run of 363 minutes without a goal in the competition.

But Shakhtar trailed for only four minutes before Oleksandr Zubkov slotted in from Georgi Sudakov’s pass across the face of the goal.

The lively Sudakov then completed the turnaround four minutes before half-time with an excellent strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Ukrainian champions Shakhtar are 28th in the 36-team league phase after adding to the point they earned in their opening match at Bologna, despite often leaving themselves open at the back in the second half in pursuit of a third goal.

Young Boys had opportunities to hit the hosts on the break but Imeri’s goal was their only shot on target and they are third bottom and remain one of five sides on zero points at the halfway stage.
