Social media activists on Tuesday stormed the National Assembly in Abuja to protest against the proposed Social Media Bill, “Frivolous Petitions (Prohibitions, Etc.) Bill, 2015″ sponsored by Senator Bala Ibn Na’Allah, the Deputy Senate Leader.

The protest, which took-off from the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja, saw activists, mostly youths converging from across several states, protesting against the bill which is currently being accorded accelerated hearing by the upper legislative chamber.

In a joint statement on Sunday, the conveners of #NoToSocialMediaBill, Aisha Yesufu, Anthony Ehilebo, Ariyo Atoye and Mukhtar Dan’Iyan, had promised to galvanize Nigerian youths to kick against the bill.

President Muhammadu Buhari had also on Monday distanced himself from the bill, stating that he would continue to guarantee the freedom of the press and not assent to any bill that contradicts the 1999 Constitution.

However, Senator Abiodun Olujimi, had told The Eagle Online earlier on Tuesday that there was a misconception about the Bill and that those who have reacted to it have not taken time to study it in details.

She said the bill is to check in the main those who write frivolous petitions.
