Strike: FG meets with NLC, TUC today

The Federal Government has invited the organised labour to a meeting on Sunday, October 1, 2023 in a bid to avert Tuesday’s planned indefinite strike by Nigerian workers.

The meeting, scheduled for 2pm at the Conference Hall in the office of the Chief of Staff to the President at the State House, Abuja, is expected to be attended by the national leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Expected at the meeting from the government’s side are the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Labour and Employment, Hon Simon Lalong; Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Hon Nkiruka Onyejeocha and other top government officials.

Today’s meeting is expected to look at the impending indefinite strike being planned by the labour unions, according to the letter of invitation issued on September 29, 2023 and signed by the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Emmanuel Igbinosun.

Igbinosun, in the one-page letter written on behalf of the Minister of Labour and Employment, stated that the labour leaders are being invited to the meeting in respect of the planned nationwide strike by workers.

The invitation letter read:

“RE-IMPENDING LABOUR UNION STRIKE  INVITATION TO A MEETING.

Further to my earlier correspondence on the above subject, I once again bring greetings from the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment.

“I am directed to invite the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) for a meeting with the government of the above subject scheduled as follows;

Date:- Sunday October 1st, 2023

Time:- 2pm

Venue:- Aso Villa Conference Room of the office of the Chief of Staff to Mr President.

“Please be assured as always of the kind regards of the Hon. Minister of Labour & Employment.”
