The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Friday, July 17 as Eid el-Fitr day, putting an end to the annual Ramadan fast.
Nigerian Muslims will now join their counterparts around the world in festivities ending the annual month of deprivation and spiritual rejuvenation.
With the pronouncement, Friday becomes the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal 1436 AH.
Sultan Abubakar said the new moon of Shawwal was sighted in 10 states of the federation.
Already, the Federal Government had declared Friday and Monday as public holidays in Nigeria.
