Piqued by the incessant crisis between Fulani herdsmen and farmers whose farm holdings were recently destroyed by grazing cattle in some states in the South West, the leadership of the Fulani Community in the zone has set up a surveillance committee.

The committee will liaise with the affected farmers and herdsmen with a view to dousing the tension in the zone.

Part of its mandate of the committee is to assess the damages to affected farm holdings by the itinerant Fulani herdsmen and work out the level of commensurate compensation for the victims.

Leader of the Fulani Community in the South West, the Sardaunan Yamma, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin, who is also the Sarkin Sasa of Ibadanland disclosed this while hosting a meeting between Fulani herdsmen and farmers from Iwo, Osun state, in his Sasa Palace, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

Alhaji Maiyasin who canvassed for dialogue between the Fulani herdsmen and farmers remarked that this is the enduring solution to the recurring crisis just as he decried, in strong terms, the inflammatory calls from some quarters for reprisal attacks on one another.

He also enjoined Fulani parents to keep eagle eyes on their children so as to guard them against engaging in criminal and other anti-social activities.

Responding, the visiting team from Iwo led by the Sarkin Hausawa of Iwo, Alhaji Ado Galadima expressed gratitude to the Sarkin Sasa for convening the meeting and opined that Iwo community would not witness Fulani herdsmen/farmers crisis.

In his address, the leader of the Fulani Community in Osun State, Alhaji Sulaiman Oluwatoyin, acknowledged the leadership prowess of the Governor of Osun state, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola in managing the itinerant Fulani herdsmen in the state.

According to him, at a meeting held with them recently at the instance of the Governor, he gave us assurance of safety of our lives and our cattle and advised us to create a committee that will sit on weekly basis to discuss harmonious relationship with farmers in the host state so that problems will be nipped in the bud without resorting to the police.”
