The General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM), Dr Daniel Olukoya, has said the church does not celebrate Christmas because it is unbiblical. Olukoya stated this on Wednesday during the Manner Water Service, which coincided with the 2019 Christmas celebration at the church’s headquarters in Lagos.

The popular cleric insisted that no book in the bible recorded the word ‘Christmas’ or that Jesus was born on December 25.

“If you really study the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, there is no word like Christmas. The bible only recorded that the Shepherds were taking care of their flocks during a very cold season when they sighted the star that announced the birth of Jesus Christ.

“This cold period could be around April or May,” Olukoya said. According to the general overseer, December 25 is a date originally set aside by ancient Romans for Mars festival among worshippers of the sun.

Olukoya said the birth of Christ was subsequently coopted into the same date to give the Mars festival more popularity and then renamed ‘Christmas’.

The Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, on Friday expressed her unhappiness over the abandonment of one Hellen Agada, a patient with multiple operations by her husband after admission.

Mrs Buhari said this when she visited the Kubwa General Hospital, Abuja, to mark Christmas with the patients and personally distribute gifts.

Although, the president’s wife was happy to have met the patients and personally distributed the gifts to them, she expressed her sadness over the woman that was left by her husband.

She said, “I am here today to tell you that we do not forget you. We have you in mind.

“I am not happy when I meet a lady who had several operations and her husband ran away and left her. I think men should have feelings for their wives.”

Mrs Buhari solicited the support of men for their wives and family, as the head of the home and advised men to always remain firm as the pillars of the home not minding the trials or tribulations.

She said she was in the hospital to celebrate and share gifts to the patients, who were suppose to have been home celebrating, but rather they were in the hospital as a result of ailments.

Mrs Buhari reiterated the need for prayers for the peace, progress and prosperity of the nation.

She wished all Nigerians a happy and prosperous New Year ahead, urging the citizens to remain peaceful and law abiding.

On his part, Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Malam Mohammed Bello, promised to improve the standard of hospitals in Abuja.

He, however, commended the president’s wife for her visit to the hospital.

Bello described Buhari as a great woman, with passion for Nigerians and the health sector.

“I am happy for the visit. You can see the happiness reflected on the faces of the patients and staff because of the gifts given to them for Christmas.

“I pray to God to empower you so that you can continue to do more in restoring happiness to the lives of the people,” he said.

Dr Ahmed Danfulani, the Medical Director of the hospital, exalted the decision of the president’s wife to choose the hospital to celebrate Christmas with patients.

He thanked the president’s wife for the gifts shared among the patients, noting that this has put smiles on the faces of the patients.

Some government employees in Benue State said they were celebrating Christmas in high spirit in spite the state government’s inability to pay their salaries.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workers, who were being owed four months’ salaries, appeared to have shunned all grievances against the state government.

They however, said they were not happy that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) was trading their welfare for political reasons and other benefits.

“Comrade Simon Anchaver‘s leadership of the state NLC has shown clearly that it is not capable of fighting for workers’ welfare.

“First, Anchaver used NLC chairmanship position and the workers welfare to bargain for his 2015 governorship ambition which he eventually lost to Prince Terhemen Tarzoor.

“He contested election without resigning his appointment with the state Ministry Agriculture because of his closeness to the governor.

“He does not have the interest of the workers at heart; all he does is look for ways of enriching himself and build his political career,” a teacher in Gboko Local Government said.

The teacher, who pleaded anonymity, criticised the NLC leadership in the state for failing to support them at the expense of their personal ambitions.

“NLC in Benue has become a political party where only party issues are being discussed instead of the welfare of members.

“Can you imagine that the NLC chairman, on December 24 at about 4:00 pm, ordered all workers to embark on a three-day warning strike should the government fail to pay salaries?

“Anchaver declared strike when he knew very well that the Federal Government had declared December 25 and 26 as public holidays to mark the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ.

“We are tired of the situation and want the national body of the NLC to wade into the matter to enable us to get our monthly salaries”.

He also appealed to the national leadership to urge President Goodluck Jonathan to call Gov .Gabriel Suswam to order.

Another teacher from Makurdi Local Government, who for fear of reprisal preferred anonymity, berated the leadership of the NLC in Benue for failing to fight for workers’ rights.

She said that the NLC’s leadership had chosen to involve itself in politics thereby abandoning its primary responsibility of fighting for workers’ welfare.
