English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored twice as AC Milan beat Rennes in the first leg of their Europa League knockout round play-off tie.

The 28-year-old headed in their opener from Alessandro Florenzi’s cross.

And he added a second with a stooping header before Rafael Leao netted Milan’s third with a fine finish.

Loftus-Cheek has scored five goals in his past five games for Milan, after only netting twice in his first 21 games following his move from Chelsea.

Elsewhere, Azerbaijan’s Qarabag picked up a surprise 4-2 win in Portugal over Braga. French midfielder Abdellah Zoubir scored twice for the visitors.

Angel di Maria scored two penalties, including a 98th-minute winner, as Benfica beat Toulouse 2-1. Lens and Freiburg played out a goalless draw.

Earlier in the day, Romelu Lukaku scored as Roma drew 1-1 at Feyenoord.

Manchester City have completed the signing of Belgium winger Jeremy Doku from Rennes for £55.4m.

Last season’s Treble winners have agree a five-year contract with the 21-year-old, who scored 10 goals in 75 Ligue 1 appearances across three seasons.

Doku, who has 16 caps for Belgium, has taken the number 11 shirt.

“This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally. City are the best team in world football, so joining them is special,” Doku said.

Doku becomes Pep Guardiola’s third summer signing after midfielder Mateo Kovacic arrived for £25m from Chelsea and defender former RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol joined for £77m.

West Ham, Tottenham and Chelsea had also been interested in signing Doku, who scored seven goals in 35 games last season.

Doku had two years left on the five-year deal he signed when Rennes paid 26m euros (£22.3m) to sign him from Anderlecht in October 2020, shortly after he made his international debut as a teenager.

Doku cited the opportunity to work under City boss Guardiola as a key factor in his decision to join the Premier League champions.

“I am a young player with so much learning and improving to do,” added the Antwerp-born winger.

“Working with Pep and his staff, and playing alongside these world-class players, will make me a much better player. I feel sure of that.

“Watching City last season was amazing. To win the Treble is the hardest thing in football and they did it. You cannot imagine how exciting it is to be joining this team. I cannot wait to get started. Hopefully I can make the fans happy.”

City’s director of Football Txiki Begiristain has tipped Doku to develop into a “world class” attacking player under Guardiola’s guidance.

He added: “Jeremy is a very exciting young player and I’m so pleased he’s joining us.

“In terms of raw attributes, he has everything a winger needs. He has outstanding pace and he is exceptional in one-on-one situations.

“I honestly believe working with Pep and the technical staff here at City will see him develop into a world-class attacking talent.”

French champions Paris St-Germain fell to a surprise defeat as they threw away a goal lead and were beaten by Rennes.

Edinson Cavani, who had earlier hit the post, gave PSG the lead when he was gifted the ball by Rennes captain Damien da Silva’s misplaced backpass.

PSG, again without Neymar, had a chance to make it 2-0 but Kylian Mbappe also hit the woodwork.

Mbaye Niang’s curled finish made it 1-1 before Romain del Castillo headed in a cross from Eduardo Camavinga, 16.

Rennes had a chance to grab a third goal but Jeremy Gelin’s header hit the post, with Mbappe and Cavani both missing late chances to make it 2-2.

PSG only lost five Ligue 1 matches in 2018-19 as they won the title by 16 points, while Rennes, who came 10th last season, denied PSG a league and cup double as they beat them on penalties in the final of the French Cup.

Once again, PSG were without Brazil forward Neymar with the world’s most expensive player continuing to be the subject of interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Kylian Mbappe was sent off for a shocking tackle as Paris Saint-Germain were stunned by Rennes in Saturday’s French Cup final, losing 6-5 on penalties after a dramatic game finished 2-2 at the end of extra time.

PSG substitute Christopher Nkunku blazed his sudden-death spot-kick over the bar in the shootout, sparking scenes of joy among the Rennes fans at the Stade de France as they won a first trophy in almost half a century.

“It has been talked about enough at the club in the last few weeks for us to realise that we have achieved something historic,” said Rennes coach Julien Stephan.

It was a remarkable comeback from the Brittany side, who had seen Dani Alves and the returning Neymar give Ligue 1 champions PSG a 2-0 lead midway through the first half.

Thomas Tuchel’s side appeared poised to wrap up a domestic double, but Presnel Kimpembe’s own goal gave Rennes hope and Edson Mexer headed them level in the 66th minute to take a gripping final — attended by President Emmanuel Macron — to extra time.
