The Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has expressed support for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC’s Public, Private Partnership, PPP, an initiative in driving the sustainable development of the Niger Delta region.

Ogiame Atuwatse III offered his support when a delegation from the NDDC led by the Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, paid him a courtesy visit to his palace in Warri, Delta State. The NDDC team included the Executive Director, of Projects, Mr.  Charles Ogunmola, and other directors of the Commission.

The Monarch commended the efforts of the NDDC in re-activating the construction of the Omadino-Escravos Road, as well as the Koko-Oghoye Road, noting that they would boost economic activities in his kingdom.

He observed: “I am an ardent believer that if you want Nigeria to work, you should get the Niger Delta working.”

According to the royal father: “The Chinese have a saying which I have found to be true. If you want to end poverty, build a road. I assure you that when it concerns development in the Niger Delta region, I’m your number one supporter.  I promise to reach out to the Delta State Government and the IOCs to support your PPP initiative.”

Speaking earlier, the NDDC Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ogbuku, said it was necessary to visit the Warri Monarch because the Commission recognized the fact “that Warri kingdom is the hub of oil and gas activities in the Niger Delta region.”

He lamented that Warri was now a shadow of itself since most of the International Oil Companies moved out of the city and took their operations to the deep offshore.

Ogbuku stated that the NDDC was coming up with new ways of working with development partners to change the story of Nigeria’s oil-rich region.

He remarked: “We have come up with a PPP Committee to help change the narrative in the Niger Delta region. Today, our doors are open to new partnerships through PPP. We have visited the NNPC to explore possibilities of collaboration with them. We are here to seek your support in reaching out to key stakeholders in the Niger Delta region such as the Delta State Government and the International Oil Companies operating in your kingdom to support our PPP initiatives.”

The NDDC boss appealed to the Warri Monarch to assist the Commission in building partnerships for the completion of the Koko-Oghoye Road project in the Warri North Local Government Area, which would connect Warri to Escravos.

Ogbuku recalled that the successful completion of the 29-kilometer Ogbia-Nembe Road in Bayelsa State was a good example of the partnership between Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC, and NDDC.

Nigeria is at risk of another FIFA ban after a court declared the elections that ushered in Amaju Pinnick as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) illegal.

World football governing body FIFA have warned that should anything hinder the newly-elected NFF executive committee led by Pinnick, the former Delta FA chairman, from operating, they will move for an automatic ban of Nigeria till the next FIFA congress in May.

On Thursday, Justice Ambrose Allagoa of the federal high court in central city of Jos ruled against the NFF elections in Warri of September 30 as well as the congress before it.

“I have set aside all the proceedings and decisions of the Warri extraordinary meeting of the 20th September and the elective congress of 30th September which were (in) direct contravention of the orders of this court as granted on the 19th September,” said the judge.

Delta State Government said on Sunday that a cult of teenage homosexuals patronised by gay men exists in Warri.

Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, who made the disclosure in his Easter message to Deltans at the First Baptist Church, Warri, said teenagers from ages 15 to 18 belong to the sect named Yansh, and live in rented apartments close to Enerhen Junction, Warri, where men come to sleep with them.

He said that “These are our sons and men come to sleep with them. It is through the Edu Marshals Programme that we discovered them. We used to know about female harlots, now we have male harlots. Unfortunately they are young boys. There is much government can do, but there is more we can do as parents.”

Uduaghan, who noted that the country was going through trying times, challenged parents to be alive to the realities of today’s society as crimes committed daily were committed by children belonging to parents who are members of the immediate society.

About 350 Nigerian workers of Chevron Nigeria Limited may soon lose their job, as the company commences its downsizing exercise.

Curiously, sources told our correspondent in Warri, Delta State that the downsizing exercise will affect only Nigerian workers as the over 500 expatriates are said to be spared in the exercise.

Reliable sources said that the job severance measure, entitled Voluntary Separation Package, VSP, started this month and ir is billed to terminate December 12.

Our correspondent gathered that the exercise is already causing friction between the management and its workers, while union officials insist that management was executing an agreement that had not been signed.

Sources said that Chevron management accepted that production was going on smoothly, but that their expenses was eating up their gains, hence the need to downsize to remain in business.
