President Bola Tinubu on Thursday met with governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The meeting, which is holding at the Aso Rock villa, is coming days before a planned nationwide strike over the economic hardship sweeping through the land.

The removal of subsidy on petrol and the unification of the foreign exchange rate have led to spiralling inflation.

There have been reports that the protests will commence in the first week of August.

Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo and chair of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF); and AbdulRazaq AbdulRahman, governor of Kwara and chair of Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF); led the APC governors to the presidential villa.

Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Hyacinth Alia (Benue) were among those seen heading for the meeting.

There have been calls to shelve the protests over a possible hijack by hoodlums.

Similarly, President Tinubu met  with traditional rulers from across the country at the State House in Abuja.

The royal fathers were led by Muhammad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto, and Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife.

The reason for the meeting was not immediately known, but TheCable understands that it could be part of moves by the president to avert the planned protest against the economic hardship in the country.

The president has held meetings with different stakeholders over the planned nationwide protest.

The United Nations (UN) has also warned that there are possibilities of certain groups with ulterior interests hijacking the protest which may lead to violence.

Vice-President Kashim Shettima; Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA); Wale Edun, minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy; and Atiku Bagudu, minister of budget and economic planning, also joined Tinubu at the meeting with traditional rulers.

AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, governor of Kwara and chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), and Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo and chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, were also seen joining the meeting.
