Tragedy mars UNILAG’s convocation as Shehu of Borno’s brother dies in mid-morning inferno

An early morning fire that razed down four guest rooms, where the delegation from Borno State were lodged at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), has claimed the live of the brother of the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji-Abubakar-El-Kanemi.

Umar Abubakar Garbai died in the inferno while three others reportedly suffered varying degrees of injuries.

The fire incident which began at 2am on Thursday, caught the delegation unawares since they were deep in sleep.

Before the arrival of the fire service, three other guest rooms had been gutted by fire before the flames were finally put out.

South-west Zonal Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Suleiman Yakubu, who confirmed the incident, said although four guest rooms were involved, only one of the occupants died.

Speaking through the zonal Spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, the coordinator said the deceased died of suffocation.

“There was a fire outbreak involving members of delegation of Shehu of Borno at UNILAG. The incident happened at the Shehu of Borno guest house in UNILAG and one person died of suffocation.

“The deceased was a brother to Shehu of Borno, Umar Abubakar Garbai. The guest house A12 was involved.

“The deceased will be flown to Maiduguri for burial today. There are 4 guests’ rooms affected altogether A12, A13, A 14 and A15.”
