Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg in his side’s Champions League loss at PSV Eindhoven.

Shaw, 20, will return to Manchester for an operation, the club confirmed.

He received oxygen while being treated on the pitch for 10 minutes after Hector Moreno’s tackle.

“It is awful. It was a very bad tackle. He had the oxygen mask on and was crying in the dressing room,” said manager Louis van Gaal.

The left-back started each of United’s eight games this season, as well as playing in England’s European Championship qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.

Shaw suffered a broken tibia and fibula, similar to the injury suffered by Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey against Stoke in 2010.

The Welshman was ruled out for nine months, meaning the injury puts the England defender’s participation at Euro 2016 in doubt.

Less than an hour after suffering the injury Shaw wrote on Twitter: “Thank you everyone for your messages, words can’t describe how gutted I am, my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.”

United had a luckless night as Shaw was chopped down by Hector Moreno before being carried off early on.

After a long delay, Memphis Depay scored a weaving opener on his return to PSV, but in first-half injury time Moreno headed in from a corner.

PSV’s Luciano Narsingh headed in a 57th-minute winner despite United dominating for long periods.

Unlike previous games this season where Louis van Gaal’s side have struggled to turn their superiority into chances, they chalked up 17 shots on goal to PSV’s six.

There were encouraging displays from Depay, who scored his third of the season, and Anthony Martial, who made his full debut following his wonder goal during the win over Liverpool last Saturday.

Poor finishing let the visitors down, although their biggest concern will be over Shaw who will now suffer a lengthy lay-off.
